Creating a breakthrough for Phong Nha - Ke Bang tourism

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is becoming an attractive tourist
destination in the country as well as in the world, contributing to
enhancing the image and position of Quang Binh tourism. Currently, tourism
products here are still not commensurate, the quality of some tourism
products is not high and is seasonal. With the project 'Ecotourism, resort,
entertainment Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park until 2030', Quang Binh
province hopes to create a breakthrough in attracting investment in tourism
development, effectively promoting the values of the World Natural Heritage.

The project to develop ecotourism by 2030 identifies 9 points and 11 tourist
routes in Phong Nha-Ke Bang with potential that need priority investment
calls to develop tourism types and products.

Director of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park Management Board Pham Hong Thai
said that this National Park contains many outstanding global values in
geology, geomorphology and biodiversity. Phong Nha-Ke Bang limestone
mountain range is one of the largest Karst blocks in Southeast Asia, with a
history of formation over 400 million years ago with all the main stages of
development of the earth's crust; there are more than 1,000 caves, of which
425 have been surveyed and measured with a length of over 230 km, of which
Son Doong is the largest cave in the world. These are attractive
destinations for domestic and foreign tourists.

There is also a diverse and rich flora and fauna system with 2,953 plant
species and 1,394 animal species; of which, there are 43 newly discovered
species for science and many rare species. In addition, the core zone and
buffer zone of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park have many historical and
cultural values such as: the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail Special Relic, Road
20 Quyet Thang, Tam Thanh Nien Xung Phong Cave, the Ma Coong drum beating
festival, the Bru-Van Kieu new rice celebration... With these values, this
National Park with an area of over 123 thousand hectares has been twice
recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage .

From only two tourism products, visiting Phong Nha Cave and Tien Son Cave,
Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park now has 17 tourism products, including
international-class tourism products such as: "Conquering Son Doong, the
world's largest cave" or "Conquering and visiting En Cave". After 22 years
since being recognized as a World Natural Heritage, the total number of
	visitors to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has reached nearly 11 million;
tourism revenue has reached about 2,000 billion VND.

However, according to the Director of the Park Management Board, the quality
of some products is not commensurate with the heritage resources, tourism is
still seasonal, and there is overlap in products, so it is not really
attractive to tourists. Meanwhile, the potential for tourism development of
the park is still very large, because this place not only has a beautiful
and attractive cave system but also has seemingly endless mysteries under
	the primeval forests.

We had the opportunity to visit the area of the green stone cypress
discovered in 2004, a rare and endemic plant species in the world that
currently only exists in the Phong Nha-Ke Bang evergreen tropical forest.
The green stone cypress is a large, evergreen, coniferous tree with a wide
canopy; it reproduces monoeciously by seeds and is considered the most
unique forest habitat, due to its global importance and conservation value,
and is classified as endangered by the World Red Book.

Currently, the green stone cypress lives mainly in the limestone mountain
area belonging to the strictly protected sub-zone of the National Park core
zone with an area of over 5,000 hectares. The presence of this ancient and
endemic plant species is a scientific proof affirming the pristine and
unique biodiversity of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.

During the war, U Bo used to be a fierce place in Quang Binh. Now, from the
Tra Ang bridge intersection, driving along the western branch of Ho Chi Minh
road for a while and stopping at Km51, visitors begin their journey to
conquer U Bo with many beautiful and charming landscapes. When reaching the
top of U Bo, the song "Truong Son Dong, Truong Son Tay, the sun is burning,
the rain is spinning" is more accurate than ever. At an altitude of more
than 900m, visitors can easily see a panoramic view of a large primeval
	forest below.

On sunny and clear days, far away from U Bo peak, Dong Hoi city with its
blue sea and golden sand strip and undulating high-rise buildings appears,
beautiful as a picture. In the near future, Quang Binh province will allow
the opening of a tourist route to explore the green cypress population on
the high mountains or explore the nature of U Bo peak, promising to bring
many attractive and rare experiences to tourists when coming to the majestic
	Truong Son range.

Director of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park Management Board Pham Hong Thai
said that recently, the People's Committee of Quang Binh province identified
20 areas, including 9 points with a scale of about 342 hectares and 11
potential tourist routes in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park to call for
investment in developing tourism types and products.

These new tourist destinations all have their own colors and appeal. If the
eco-tourism destination experiences the zoo with typical tourism products
that can be developed into sightseeing, study, scientific research and
environmental education services, entertainment services, then the
high-class resort tourist destination at Km7, Road 20, Quyet Thang is
oriented to be built into a resort or hotel with quality from 5 stars or
	higher.

In addition, some tourist destinations, such as: Doi Mountain semi-wild
area, U Bo Mountain high-end resort, Chay waterfall eco-tourism, Ba Tay hill
resort, Hung Tram Na high-end resort... are oriented to develop into
eco-tourism destinations, observing wildlife and exploring cultural and
historical values, building high-end resorts or hotels, mountain climbing,
	bathing in streams, kayaking...

Along with that, in this National Park, there are 11 areas with unique and
mysterious potential that are being developed into tourist routes,
including: Exploring the nature of Re Khe forest, exploring the nature of Ca
Roong Kling Acu cave, experiencing the nature of Vom gieng Vooc cave,
exploring the nature of Chi Linh cave, Cay Sanh cave, Bai cave, conquering U
Bo peak and experiencing nature on Truong Son peak, exploring the population
of green stone cypresses over 500 years old, living on limestone mountains
at an altitude of over 600m...

According to Mr. Pham Hong Thai, shortly after the announcement of the
decision of the People's Committee of Quang Binh province approving the
project of eco-tourism, resort and entertainment in Phong Nha-Ke Bang
National Park until 2030, many tourism businesses have come to explore
investment opportunities. The first projects have also begun, from the
document procedures to administrative decisions, including enthusiastic
investors and a number of famous products associated with the Phong Nha-Ke
	Bang World Natural Heritage.

Ba Tay Hill area, a resort tourism project designed to lean against the
cliff and watch the Son River, with environmentally friendly construction
materials and landscape, promises to bring a fresh and attractive feeling
when visitors come to travel and relax in the center of Phong Nha tourist
town. The tourism project to explore the nature of Chi Linh cave, also known
as the 7-storey cave, is also being urgently invested in by the enterprise.
This cave has stalactites that are not prominent compared to other caves,
but it was the place where the army set up barracks and warehouses during
the years of Vietnam war, so the space is quite large and flat. The
enterprise investing in this tourism product is a combination of exploring
nature with historical experiences through the application of digital
technology so that viewers can feel the sound of bombs, bullets, and trucks
transporting goods in the forest during the war years.

With 20 areas of unique value in terms of geomorphology, geology, natural
landscape and historical culture, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park Management
Board is committed to coordinating and creating the best conditions for
businesses and investors to conduct field surveys in potential areas; at the
same time, providing full information on natural, social, climate,
geological and topographic conditions for investors to form ideas and have
feasible solutions for investment projects to turn the potential values of
the heritage into different and unique tourism products, so that the
heritage is not only a title but must be sustainably preserved and bring
	economic value to the community.
