Bach Ma Mountain, a wonderful place for visiting to discover its old history, majesty nature with the splendid beauty as well as to relax in peaceful atmosphere with the cool climate during the year.

Bach Ma Mountain is located at Phu Loc village, Nam Dong district, Hue Province. It is about 60 km to the south from Hue city centre. It takes us one hour by car to make a trip to there. It is 90 km from Da nang city and 120 km from Hoi An ancient town.

It is recognized as one of the biodiversity centre of Indochina for ecological diversification. The forest, lakes, water fall, plants and animals in this mountain are so diversity and majesty.

Bach Ma was selected by the French engineer- Girard to become a hill station for the colonial administration of Hue in the year of 1932. In the following years, a village including many villas and hotels was created. To accommodate holiday makers and to avoid commuting on the steep, 19 km-long road to the next major town, there was a post office, a market and a hospital. Most of the visitors were high-ranking French VIPs. The area saw some heavy fighting between the French and Vietnamese in the early 1950s. After independence from the French, Bach Ma was soon forgotten and the villas abandoned.

In the 60’s the Americans came to Vietnam and took over this region as a strategic base for their military actions controlling the stretch between Hue province and Da Nang province.

In 1976 the Vietnamese Government stated the Bach Ma national Park at this mountain and extending the Park over the years to its current. Today they are in total ruin and only a few stone walls remain. At an elevation of 1250 meters above sea level, this mountain is a popular summer retreat for the Vietnamese, who come to feel the relief of the cooler temperatures.

This mountain was first protected as a series of forest reserves, and was declared a protected area by the government of South Vietnam in 1962. The National Park, suffered from the use of defoliants like Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. Bach Ma National Park is situated in the Mountain and is one of the wettest places in Vietnam. Its mountains are composed mainly of granite, and the topography of the park is generally very steep.

Bach Ma’s position, at the bio-geographical border between the Northern and the Southern regions of Vietnam, combined with its variety of habitants, ranging from the coast to the high mountain, means the park is very rich in biodiversity. It is located in a region that is considered a centre of plant diversity in Vietnam. The main vegetation type is moist evergreen and forest as well as regions of scrub and grassland where human disturbance has been high.

The mammals of Bach Ma are famous, though historically it held importance species such as the Asian elephant and white-cheeked gibbon. It also protects important and rare bird species, especially Vietnamese endemics such as the created Argus, Annan partridge and Edwards’s pheasant which had been thought extinct for long time ago. Besides Bach Ma it’s turbulent History it has foremost become a place of great beauty with amazing landscapes, unique biodiversity and unspoiled lakes.

Bach Ma National Park is a paradise for nature lovers. You will reach to the region with a large variety of native vegetation and wildlife and is famous for being home to one–fifth of Vietnam plant life. Besides these 1,400 species of plants, including rare orchids, the park is home to more than 130 species of mammals and is considered a great for avid bird –watchers. If you are fit enough, you can head down to the bottom of the falls to fully admire its natural beauty. Then head back to the main lane and freshen up before hopping in your private vehicle for the drive down the winding road back to Hue.
